Urban World/Global City
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (17 September, 1996)
Author: David Clark
Average review score:

very informative for the general public
We are using this book for our perspectives class and it is really an interesting piece of collection of ideas and thoughts. The author relies on a lot of data to prooove his points which I think is very necessary in this kind of studies. The only problem which I have is that the author does not mention much about the asian subcontinent of India, which in my opinion is very useful and informative to the readers of books such as these.

The Uses of the University
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1995)
Author: Clark Kerr
Average review score:

Fifth Edition, Still the Best in Class

Of the three books read and reviewed on the role of the university within a nation, this is the best, with Derek Bok's volume on universities in the marketplace being the runner up.

With a new preface written in 2001, and a pattern over the course of five editions of each time updating, correcting, and commenting on differences between past predictions and actual outcomes, this book appears to be the best available on this topic.

The author is alarmed by the possibilities that universities, which were nurtured by post-World War II federal funding and state funding that is now vanishing, could begin to fail in almost catastrophic terms. Between aging and unrepentent faculty, the vanishing of liberal arts (or even quality education) for undergraduates, and the prostitution of graduate education to commercial purposes, there does appear to be a crisis.

After noting that America appears to spend more on prisons than on universities, the author makes several recommendations, all of which appear sensible. They include a new emphasis on university support to primary and secondary education, a rationalization of information technology within communities to better link businesses with members of the university family, the exploration of distance learning alternatives (as much to reach the drop-outs inexpensively as for any other reason), and the resurrection of mid-career education or continuing education as a mainstream expectation for personal as well as business advancement.

The author, who clearly has a very strong ethical perspective, quotes Alfred North Whitehead, who concluded that any society that "does not value trained intelligence is doomed" and adds his own view, that "the university that does not fully dedicate itself above all else to the continuing advancement of trained intelligence is also doomed."

This is a really fine book that should be in the library of anyone seeking to understand "national intelligence" as Thomas Jefferson understood it when he said "A Nation's best defense is an educated citizenry."

A Visit from Saint Nicholas
Published in Paperback by Fine Arts Pr (15 October, 1988)
Authors: Clement Clark Moore and Theodore C. Boyd
Average review score:

one of 2 of the best version ever.
I know there are many books on the famous poem, but this one has illustrations from way back in 1869. Like old Victorian Christmas cards, this captures the artwork of it's time. Along with a copy of the handwritten poem and the first class artwork, makes this an awesome gift to treasure, and to pass down the generations.

The other fantastic version is again a reproduction of the poem, (Philomel Books)McLoughlin Bros.,but from 1888,with Santa in a green coat.

These are the two books you will ever need to partner the classic old poem. Both hardback, and from Amazon.com

Walker Evans: The Lost Work
Published in Hardcover by Arena Editions (15 October, 2000)
Authors: Walker Evans, Belinda Rathbone, and Clark Worswick
Average review score:

Secret and Excellent Documentary of America
'The Lost Work' refers to Walker Evans's own private collection of his B/W images - 'the prints that he chose to keep in his own print boxes for posterity'. He was probably the greatest documentary artist America has ever known. It presents the faces and lives of Americans in the late 1930s and then to the mid 1970s.

From the introduction, we can see how a photographer had struggled for his lifetime for acquiring support, and eventually his works could 'enter' museum or collectors' hand during the end of his life. Behind the images, you may have a deeper insight of this photographer. From his life, it seems very contradictory between his character and his images.

The printing of this book is excellent.

Water's Way: Life Along the Chesapeake
Published in Hardcover by Elliott & Clark Pub (April, 1992)
Authors: Tom Horton, David W. Harp, Carolyn M. Clark, and Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Average review score:

Review of Water's Way
Water's Way is a stunningly photographed, and exquisitely written glimpse of life in the Chesapeake region. The book celebrates beauty, both in the natural and human worlds. Author Tom Horton's essays are insightful, humorous, and well-crafted. His words flow like the many creeks and rivers that he describes on the Delmarva peninsula. Dave Harp's photography defines the people, animals, and landscape in such concert with Horton's words that the book should be considered the National Geographic of the Eastern Shore. This a worthy addition to anyone's coffee table.
